Our diploma thesis is located at Kato Chalepa and Agios Panteleimon region, one of the oldest outside the city-walls of Chania neighborhoods. Despite the fact that the architectural identity of the aera was kept until the mid-1990s, nowadays the stream of Agios Panteleimonas is considered as an urban void and the whole area is developing without being oriented towards it. The main idea is the activation and regeneration of the area by altering the region's orientation towards the stream. Macroscopically, in an intentions diagram we attempt to restore the stream of Agios Panteleimonas and create a longitudinal connection towards Chania. However, our key study constitutes the transverse connection between the Chalepa area and the town. Our proposal consisted of a public spaces network’s redesign, house typologies design and the old shell’s restoration.

URBAN ANALYSIS

masterplan

Through the urban regeneration of Kato Chalepa area , two transverse routes are created. The attempt is to redesign the existing road which connects our design area with the town in order to create a shorter route for the pedestrians and vehicles enhancing their coexistence. Furthermore, the dominant target is the creation of a new sidewalk for residents and pedestrians connecting the Chalepa area with the stream.

TYPOLOGIES

In the proposed house typologies it is an attempt to maintain the area's scale by adapting it into the design logic, integrating Mediterranean architecture design qualities. There are five dominant design points. The yard which is designed as the core of the house, the roof which is designed as a directly exploitable living space, as we find in Mediterranean architecture. An intermediate space creation as a common zone between the public and the private part of the house. Interior and panels design in order to isolate or unify the private spaces with the intermediate spaces and finally the house level being at plus 1.3m from the street level TYPOLOGY D trying to ensure privacy and

RESTORATION

The last part of the project consists of the restoration and the reuse of Villa Pologiorgi, an old 19-century shell and the creation of a neighborhood center on the lowest level of the villa’s area. By this restoration the attempt is to create a direct connection between the nearest school complex, our study area and the stream. The intervention method in the abandoned building contains restoration of the northern and southern volume of the building. Metal, wood and glass are used trying to emphasize the reversibility of the construction. As far as the restoration of the roof is concerned, it is proposed to construct a gabled roof, in contrast to the pre-existing four-pitched one, which operates in a single frame with the roofs of the north and south volume of the building.
